The State Street Kids

This is a wonderful piece of work.

It made me think a lot. I was happy when I was with the "state street" kids. I can't remember what I did for money, or food. Where I kept my shit. But I remember the feeling. Of being part of a group.

It's so true. They don't care how you look. I mean, let's face it. I show up with my GAP hoodie and jeans and say "hi, I"m Jess's friend." And they all say "Hi." They were all dressed in black, playing role playing games I knew nothing about and sitting in the dark with at least ten candles lit. All of them...all eight or nine...shoved into Chris's little one bedroom apartment. And within minutes I was part of them. I was a "college run-a-way" so to speak. I had nowhere to go and didn't have any money. I brought a bag of groceries with me from my dorm and a sack of clothes. That's it...and they accepted me. Oh yes, and my car.

And it's amazing how true that stuff is. Zero worked at the mall, Chris let everyone stay with him. Jess and I fed them when we could, and I gave them rides around town. I remember one night I was in the middle of an insulin reaction and there was no food. They scraped up enough change to go down to Cap Center and buy a pack of Ramen Noodles. God...why did it take this to realize what they really meant to me?

And they do have talent. Carlie and her black book. Chris and him drum obsession. They really are people damnit.

So here's to you....Stray, Vlad, Set, Rom, Zero, Logan, Carlie, Jess and everyone else that's part or was a part of The Family. Thanks for caring for me and teaching me about a part of me that will never be forgot. As they say...better late than never.

Thanks for that link! Those are some really nice photographs, and a very different perspective than what is usually thrown in our faces here in madison.

Both a_gothic_beauty and I both lived around State Street for awhile. I agree, it's refreshing to see a differnt perspective on this problem than the general "it doesn't exsist" attitude.
